Belize 2010

Overview
Belize is a natural wonderland.  Situated on the Caribbean Sea it's eastern shore is blessed with the second largest barrier reef in the world, second only to the Great Barrier Reef of Australia.  It is also known for its ancient ruins amid beautiful jungles in the west.  Its warm and friendly people make up the only official English speaking country in Central America though most Belizeans speak Spanish as well.

In Belize, we will be building a needed addition to an elementary school in a small village on the outskirts of Corozal Belize. This new schoolroom will be an addition to the existing one-room school library and will allow the school to qualify for a government program that will bring computers to the school for the first time. The AYS group will spend one weekend visiting the exotic island of Ambergris Caye where they will snorkel in the National Marine Reserve and one weekend tubing through jungle caves in underground rivers and touring Book of Mormon ruins.

Brazil 2010

Overview

Brazil is known for its natural wonders, tropical beaches, and fun loving people.  Some people say that Brazil is always a party or that everyone should be a Brazilian.  You'll feel that way as well on this AYS expedition.  The people will love you and you will love them back.  Regardless of their circumstances Brazilians love life and live it to the fullest.

Come with AYS and work with a foster child organization in Niteroi Brazil that focuses on rescuing children from abusive or neglectful parents. This year¹s project in Brazil will be to build a new home for boys that have been abandoned or placed in foster care by the government. They currently live in an old, run-down house but have land for the construction of a new home.  These expeditions will have the fantastic opportunity to tour the beautiful city of Rio home of the 2016 Olympics and visit one of the natural wonders of the world, Iguazu Falls along with a border crossing into Argentina and Paraguay.

Fiji 2010

Overview
Fiji faces many hygiene and health-related issues. This summer, you'll be working alongside villagers in adding bathrooms to homes that are currently without including flush toilet systems. Your efforts will help the people of Fiji reach a new standard of living. On the weekends you will enjoy one of the pristine outer islands, swim in waterfalls and play on the beautiful beaches, all the while interacting with one of the warmest and friendliest cultures of the world. Also, you will stay in a traditional “Bure” (thatch roof building on stilts) right on the beach. Fiji offers a most amazing experience!

Peru 2010

Overview
It’s hard to imagine feeling any closer to nature and the marvels of ancient civilization than in the heart of Peru. You will be promoting the idea of self-sufficiency as you work with a small orphanage nestled in the Sacred Valley of Peru. The surrounding environment is surreal as you gaze around and find that everything you see looks like it came straight from a picture. The orphans of the Sunflower home are so happy and anxious to welcome back AYS again this year as we assist them in building upon their dream for a better life. We will work at the orphanage, helping with expansion of the orphanage as well as their nearby farm where these children learn life-sustaining skills. You will also have the awesome opportunity to visit Machu Picchu, the ancient mystical city of the Incas and climb Huayna Picchu for an amazing view of “the lost city of the Incas.”

Tonga 2010

Overview
The Kingdom of Tonga is warm and beautiful, but the people are even more so. Unfortunately, helping youth understand the importance of education has proven difficult in this country. In Tonga, you will in activities designed to create a vision of how education can improve living conditions both socially and economically. The LDS Church is very strong here and you will have many opportunities to interact with members your age who will share with you a lot of what the Polynesian culture is all about.

Waiting List 2010

Each year we have a few confirmed participants that are unable to go on the trip they have reserved.  When this happens we will make their space available for those on the waiting list.  Here is how the waiting list works:

  • We do not start a waiting list until all the trips are full for young women or young men.  We will only place 15 young women and 5 young men on the waiting list.
  • We only have one waiting list that covers all the trips; all countries and all dates.
  • We place people on the list in the order in which they apply.
  • In order to be on the list you have to fill out the entire application (select "Waiting List" where it asks for trip name), pay a $500 deposit and be confirmed by AYS.  If you do not go on a trip your $500 deposit will be refunded.
  • Once you have submitted your application and payment you will be notified when you are officially confirmed on the list ( usually within 2-3 days).
  • When a space becomes available we will notify the first person on the list.  They will have one day to decide to go on the trip.  If they decide that they don't want to take that space for whatever reason, then the space will be offered to the second person on the list and so forth.  The first person will retain their first position on the list and will be given the first opportunity for the next space that may become available.
  • People on the waiting list that are unable to go this year will be given the first opportunity to sign up for next year's expeditions.
  • People on the waiting list are encouraged to start their fund raising.  If they are unable to go on an expedition this year, any discounts that they earn from fund raising this year will be applied to next year.
  • You will have at least 45 days notice before the start date of the trip if a space opens up for the trip.  This also means that no spaces will be filled from the waiting list less than 45 days before the trip starts.
  • If you have been confirmed on the waiting list, you may check on your position on the list at any time by calling or emailing us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

PLEASE NOTE:  The waiting list will not be available (N/A) for young men or adults if there are still spaces available on any of the trips for young men or adult coaches.  If you would like to be on the waiting list for young men or adults please check the web site often as we will open the waiting list once all the trip spaces have been filled.
